Este popular in Japonia si alte tari asiatice; are boabe scurte dar nu este inrudit cu alte tipuri de orez similare. Boabele sale sunt foarte lipicioase si devine transparent cand este gatit. Lipiciozitatea sa il face potrivit pentru galusti si prajituri, cum ar fi felurile japoneze “mochi”.
